Directions

The motorist slowed down and opened the passenger-side window.
"Excuse me," he said to a woman on the pavement.
She turned and looked at the man.
"Do you know how to get to the hospital from here?"
The woman thought for a second.
"Sorry," she said, "I don't live around here. I've no idea."
"You don't know?"
"Sorry," she said again.
"How do you not know where the hospital is?"
"How do you not know where the hospital is?"
She walked away as someone walked past her in the opposite direction.
"Excuse me..." she heard again.
