He wasn't ready.
It wasn't like it was unexpected - he'd known about it for ages. It was just a combination of laziness and forgetfulness that had led to him now standing there, not ready in the least.
He couldn't admit this so he did the only thing he could do under the circumstances. He took a deep breath and winged it.
